Remember Dorothy Gale’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz (of course we all remember!). While the mere mention of ruby and slippers is enough for a memory jog to Oz, it was the happily ever after union between the socks and shoes that left an impression on my young fashion seeking soul.
The point is, that movie those shoes and them socks kind of left an imprint on my fashion choices and my childhood fantasies. When put together whimsically or consciously, a great pair of shoes with a quirky pair of socks will put you on the fashion map for all the right reasons. I learnt to identify the underdogs behind exceptional outfits thanks to this happy couple. That underdog could simply be a brooch from your grandmother’s closet, a ribbon that two times as a choker, that neck scarf that does extra hours as a bag scarf to put herself through fashion school, those earrings that clip on as a pendant to the two timing ribbon or those socks that went unnoticed because she spent all her drool on the “IT” bag.
I remember clicking my dull uniform shoes three times and whispering “there is no place like home” hoping to teleport to my home from my boarding school far far away. Instead I was still seated in Sister Elsy’s class pretending to know the answer to “which is the only living planet in our solar system?”
Yes, that happened and just to clarify I “kind of” knew the answer but I had my doubts if we were the only living planet!!
Twenty something years later and oceans away from Sister Elsy on the “only living planet”, I am finally embracing this trend in my whole of five feet (and sometimes) something . You may think, that is a lot to say about a micro trend but the thing is personal style and expression comes from personal stories. Some of the best fashion statements are a result of such connections and experiences, be it to your mother’s closet or your grandmother’s brooch or in my case to Dorothy’s slippers and glorious socks.
I hope you enjoy what you see and find yourself an inspiring pair of socks that make your shoes go, click…click … click “take me home ….or wait take me shopping, I need more socks!!”
